With several million followers on TikTok alone, Duolingo is known for being in-tune with pop-culture, but they're still struggling to grow their user base. How does one of the most popular language learning apps convert their pop-culture-loving followers into consistent app users? By focusing on a valuable insight: over 91% of modern day consumers are using subtitles for their movie and TV consumption. To combat this vast majority, Duolingo challenges the audience by asserting that the subtitles should instead be "killed", because true cinephiles would choose to learn the language of their favorite film rather than read the entire thing.
